Located in Central America, Guatemala is a cultural and natural wonder. The country is spread between the Pacific and Caribbean coasts with beaches on each. The capital, Guatemala City, is in the large central highlands region. Mayan ruins are abundant throughout the country but the best examples are in the north, in the jungle. The Caribbean coast is a tropical paradise and caters to tourists.

La Antigua Guatemala has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town has fine examples of colonial buildings and homes. The town is famous for the detailed festivals held during the weeks before Easter. Also, make time to stop by the jade factory. Chichi Castenango is a highland mountain town famous for its traditional markets. You can find local crafts, beadwork, and textiles here.

Lake Atitlan is a beautiful spot in the mountains. There are many volcanoes in the area. Because of the volcanoes the closest beach, Monterrico, has volcanic sand on its coasts.

You must visit the Mayan Ruins while here. The largest are found in Tikal. There is a park nearby for camping or you can stay overnight in Flores. You will want to arrive the day before you plan to see the ruins because one of the special sights is to see the sun rise over the ruins.

You will find the local food delicious. Frijoles Negros are black beans usually served with tortillas. Tamales are also popular. For rum, try the local Ron Zacapa Centenario. Coffee is available everywhere and many dishes are flavored with cardamom, a big export.

You will arrive and depart from the La Aurora Airport. International flights arrive daily. The airport is currently under construction and when finished will be completely modernized. Some visitors find it cheaper to fly into Cancun and take a smaller plane into Guatemala. Whichever way you choose to arrive you can be assured of a fantastic vacation.
